7 Reasons Why You Should Seriously Consider Losing Weight
Obesity is a problem that just seems to be getting worse and worse in many Western countries due to our love of junk food. You only need to look around you when you are walking round the shops to see just how many people are overweight. There are generally very few people who appear to be a healthy weight.
So as this is such a massive problem right now, I thought it was worth listing some reasons why you should consider trying to lose weight if you yourself are carrying a few extra pounds.
1. Enhance Your Appearance
There are some people who can still look very attractive, despite being heavily overweight. Fern Britton and Dawn French are two celebrities that immediately spring to mind.
However the fact is that you will always look healthier and more beautiful when you are a healthy weight. The only exception to this rule is when people lose far too much weight and suddenly take on a gaunt appearance, which is not a good look at all.
2. Think Of Your Children
If you are currently bringing up a family, regardless of whether you are a mother or father, you should remember that your children will desperately want you to live as long as possible (unless they are after your inheritance). So being a normal weight and exercising regularly may well help you to prolong your life for a few more years.
3. Prevent Diabetes
Some people will develop diabetes even though they are the perfect weight. However any doctor will tell you that the risk of developing diabetes is much higher when you are carrying some excess weight. Type 2 diabetes, in particular, is a real problem for obese men and women.
4. Lower The Risk Of Getting Cancer
It is estimated that 1 in 3 people will get some form of cancer at some stage of their life, and there is very little that can be done to alter these statistics. However preventative measures such as quitting smoking and drinking, staying fit and healthy, and maintaining a normal body weight can all help to lower the risk.
5. Avoid Mobility And Joint Problems
Many people underestimate the effect that excess weight can have on your body. It is only when they start to become overweight that they realise that they suddenly have a lot more problems with their joints, particularly their wrists, elbows and knees. Luckily this joint pain will often go away when they lose weight.
6. Lower The Chances Of Getting Heart Attacks And Strokes
Many people of all shapes and sizes worry about getting a heart attack or stroke once they reach the age of 50 or 60. However the risk is certainly greater amongst overweight people, so this is another reason why it is a good idea to try and slim down.
7. Reduce The Risk Of Developing Gallstones
Gallstones is a very painful condition, as I am all too aware of myself as a past sufferer. Unfortunately this is another condition which blights a lot of overweight people due in many cases to a poor diet. So reducing the amount of fat and cholesterol in your diet, and losing a few excess pounds, may help you avoid getting gallstones in the first place.
