At this time of the year we all like to have fun celebrating Halloween, and one of the things you can do to get into the spirit is to watch scary movies on TV.

However you may be surprised to learn that watching scary movies could actually aid weight loss.

I know I was surprised when I read an article about this very subject recently, but apparently this sedentary activity can actually help you burn the same amount of calories as a 30 minute walk.

It cannot just be any old movie though. It has be a particularly scary one, and the scarier the better if you want to burn more calories.

A team of scientists from the University of Westminster, in London, monitored 10 people as they watched a variety of scary movies.

After monitoring their heartbeat, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output, they found that these movies raised their heartbeat, increased their metabolic rate, and helped them to burn an average of 113 calories during a typical 90 minute film.

It was also interesting to note that the movie which really promoted calorie burning more than any other was The Shining (184 calories). This is hardly surprising because many people consider this to be the scariest movie they have ever seen, particularly the scene in this video:

Other movies that helped promote calorie burning include Jaws (161 calories), The Exorcist (158 calories), Alien (152 calories), Saw (133 calories) and one of my own personal favourites, A Nightmare on Elm Street (118 calories).

So if you are struggling to lose weight right now and are maybe spending too much time watching soaps and trashy reality shows on TV, you might want to consider watching scary movies instead because scientific studies have shown that they can help you burn more calories.

Just make sure you don’t eat a lot of junk food whilst watching them, otherwise it will all be a waste of time.
